Water as Practice

A six-week in-person aquatic program blending daily mental fitness with weekly somatic practice- designed to carry into everyday life.

What If You Could Feel Lighter, Happier, and More Connected Every Day?

Over six weeks, you'll practice noticing patterns, making different choices, and recovering more easily- supported by structure, community, and guided aquatic practice.

More than relaxation—it’s a chance to reset your mind, body, and spirit while discovering tools for lasting joy

Many people notice that time in the water helps them feel calmer, clearer, and more at ease- but that feeling doesn't always carry into the rest of the day.

Water as Practice was created for people who want to care for their nervous systems in a practical way, using daily mental fitness and weekly time in the water to build skills that translate beyond the pool.

Lasting Resilience and Inner Freedom

  • Build Emotional Resilience Through Somatic Practice

Meet weekly in a warm pool for guided conversation and somatic practice. Explore breath, balance, and gentle movement so the work becomes something you can feel- not just understand.

  • Strengthen Mental Fitness Through Daily Practice

Use a guided mental fitness app to build awareness, interrupt unhelpful patterns, and practice more supportive ways of responding backed by science.

  • Create a Rhythm That Supports Real Change

Six weeks of consistency to build the rhythm of daily practice and weekly integration creates meaningful change without adding overwhelm.

  • Feel Safe and Supported Regardless of Your Skill Level

You don’t need to be a swimmer or an expert in mindfulness to join this course. Whether you’re just starting or continuing your journey, this experience meets you exactly where you are.

Many people sense that something needs care, but aren't sure where to begin. This program offers a structured, supportive way to practice new patterns - so calm and clarity become more available in everyday life.

6 Weeks to Build a Supportive Practice

Before We Begin: Understanding Your Patterns and Strenghts

Before the first in-person session, you’ll complete a short set of assessments that help you understand how your mind responds under stress. This pre-work gives shared language and context for the practices we’ll explore together—in the pool and in daily life.

  • PQ Score Assessment: Measure how often your mind is working in your favor versus against you, offering a snapshot of your current mental fitness rather than a fixed label.

  • Saboteur Identification: Identify the common inner voices that show up under stress—patterns that create self-doubt, urgency, or reactivity—so they can be recognized rather than run the show.

  • Science-Backed Framework: Ground the work in a proven mental fitness model, so practices are purposeful—not abstract.

  • Before and After Awareness: Revisit the assessments later to notice shifts, helping make change visible without turning it into a performance or scorecard.

Before Entering the Pool: Setting Focus and Intention

Each weekly session begins on land with a brief orientation that connects daily mental fitness practice to what will be explored somatically in the water.

  • Arrival & Grounding: Shift out of the pace of the day and arrive fully before entering the pool environment.

  • Weekly Focus & Content: Introduce the week’s Positive Intelligence theme, offering a simple framework for what participants will be practicing in the water.

  • Personal Choice: Hold shared language while honoring individual pacing, comfort, and boundaries.

Pool Session: Practicing Calm Through Sensation

The pool becomes a warm, steady environment for embodied practice—an outdoor, tree-lined space that feels like a small retreat tucked into the city, even in winter.

  • Warm, Supportive Environment: Step into a 94-degree warm pool surrounded by trees, creating a quiet, urban forest feel that helps the body soften and settle.

  • Guided Body Practice: Spend about 30 minutes in gentle, guided movement and breath work designed to support relaxation, awareness, and ease in the body

  • Choice of Depth & Space: Use both shallow and deep water as feels right for you—whether you’re newer to the water or already comfortable and experienced. Have time to freely explore and enjoy.

  • Community Check-In & Integration: Close the session by reconnecting as a group to notice what you’re taking with you—setting a simple focus for carrying the practice back into daily life.

Between Sessions: Daily Mental Fitness with Positive Intelligence®

Between pool sessions, daily mental fitness practice keeps the work active and integrated into everyday life.

  • Short, Daily Practice: Use the Positive Intelligence® app for brief, guided exercises that fit into busy days.

  • Neuroscience-Backed Training: Strengthen neural pathways that support calm, clarity, and choice under stress.

  • Reducing Saboteur Patterns: Learn to recognize common inner patterns that create self-doubt, urgency, or reactivity—and practice simple ways to quiet their influence.

  • Habit formation Over Time: Build consistency through repetition, not willpower.

Who is this program for?

Water as Practice is for adults who want a grounded, practical way to care for their nervous system and build calm that carries into daily life. Participants include people who are new to the water, returning after a long time away, confident swimmers, and people simply drawn to water’s calming qualities. You’re welcome exactly as you are.

How comfortable do I need to be in the water?

Swimming ability is not a requirement. You do not need to tread water or swim laps. The pool includes shallow areas, and you choose the depth, pace, and level of engagement that feels supportive. The focus is on awareness and embodied practice, not swimming skill.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been in a pool—will I feel out of place?

Not at all. Many participants haven’t been in the water for years. Sessions are designed to be unhurried, welcoming, and non-performative. There is no expectation to keep up, push through discomfort, or do anything that doesn’t feel right in your body.

What does a typical session feel like?

A typical session feels warm, calm, and spacious. Time is built in to arrive and settle, followed by guided body-based practice and space for personal exploration in the water. The environment is quiet and focused, without pressure to participate in any particular way.

What is the pool environment like?

Sessions take place in a 90-94-degree pools.

The Seattle pool is surrounded by trees, creating a private, tucked-away, urban-forest feel—even in winter. The water is warm, and the setting is intentionally chosen to support ease and nervous system settling.

The Queen Anne Pool is indoors as part of an apartment complex. It is private and only open to our classes during sessions.

Is this a private adult space?

Yes. Sessions are for adults only. There are no children’s lessons or public swim activities happening during your session time. The space is quiet, contained, and reserved for the group.

Where is the pool located?

The Pritchard Beach pool is located at a private residential location in the Rainer Beach Seattle area. Exact address and parking details are shared after enrollment to help preserve the calm and privacy of the space.

The Queen Anne Pool is located at the Waterbabies USA pool in lower Queen Anne. It is an indoor apartment complex pool that is open only to our group during classes.

Is the pool fully ADA accessible?

Because this is a private residential pool, it is not fully ADA accessible. Entry involves uneven steps rather than a ramp or lift. If you have mobility concerns or questions about access, you’re encouraged to reach out before enrolling so we can help you decide whether this space will work for you.

What are the values of this space?

This program is explicitly pro-DEI. People of all races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, body types, and national origins are welcome. This is a queer-affirming, inclusive space. If those values do not feel aligned for you, this program may not be the right fit. We ask every participant (including the staff) to be continually striving to understand the point of view of people's lived experience that are different from their own. Together we work to increase our love, compassion, choice of words and self centered bias.
